Yes, embrace your inner geek. As I mentioned previously I had the good fortune of working with a true boardgame geek and he inspired a whole bunch of us in our little team, and a few of us went on to not only buy some fairly recent games, but to also host game nights and introduce new players to games. Invite a few buddies over, pullout Axis and Allies or Risk or Risk 2210 and have at it! Some drinks and chips and before you know it typical neighbors can be slugging it out for world domination! 
From there you can step it up on other nights.
