FLEET LIMITS

I’m sure by now you all have had a chance to read Randy’s e-mail. Does anyone know when we went to 50 ships? I thought the original message from Randy was a 100 ship limit.

The High Harvest Church successfully petitioned the Galactic Council on Military Ethics to impose a 50 ship limit on all fleets, because that's all we could afford to lose each turn.

I would favor 100 ship fleets over 50 ship fleets. If we can't have all 100 ship fleets, then I recommend we each have 10 100 ship fleets (fleets 1-10 or something)

There is no final number yet. We're discussing the merits of reducing the fleet sizes but have not settled on a number.

The alternate would be to go to 100 ships but limit the types for each fleet, such as only X carriers per fleet or X large battlestars or such in a fleet.

That way fleets of merchant ships can still function as well as invasion fleets.

While the reasons for going to lower ship limits in fleets are various the primary reason is to try to protect the players from themselves. I know that sounds condescending but it's not meant to be. Since the overwhelming reason players quit the game is losing their one big fleet they invested both time and all their RU's into it does make sense to reduce fleet sizes if for no other reason than to keep new players in the game. This was the same reason flying a fleet into a black hole or missing a 99% fleet jump does not destroy the entire fleet any longer.

That is interesting, as both CHARON EMPIRE and I have agreed to pit our largest fleets against each other in a Battle Royale this coming turn. The potential loss of RUs on both sides, combined, likely exceeds 10 million. Yet, we have both agreed to do it.

I cant imagine playing a war-game, and getting upset when you lose due to your own error.

Perhaps there should simply be a big, bold statement in the rules which states "Dont Put All Of Your Ships In One Fleet....It Might Get Destroyed!"

I've only been back in for a short while and had a fleet over the 50 ship limit - it's a fleet of colony and CB ships with some armed escorts. I built a bunch simply to conserve orders in the future. 50 ships is a bit light, but defensible.

I really like the Idea of massive Killer fleets. But it does unbalance the game as older empires start to get those bloated killer fleets to ward off the other older empires (understandable) but it gets really hard on the newbie’s as they blunder into one of those fleets. Now a 50 ship limit only levels out the number of ships that’s met. The older empires still will wipe out a newbie fleet simply do to Tec differences, a level 10 newbie meets a LVL 100+ cyber, well you see what I'm getting at. Newbie’s are going to have a hard go no matter how many ships you restrict the fleets to. I also like the Idea of my oversized bloated fleet, Hitting a Planet, absorbing the damage, taking the planet anyway, and Cyber trading it and moving on. Something I will no longer be able to do with only one fleet. Now I'll lose more ships and it will cost me more actions that sort of sucks. But you can still get a 1 mil fire power fleet with only 50 ships :twisted: My fleet will no longer blot out the sun as it approaches the target planet, now I’ll have to use more fleets to do that.
