Changes to planetary invasions Missile Strikes vs HMUs

Ok. In my bid to expand my empire I tend to pick on a lot of NPCs. Some of these are even caveman level (tech 2). This series of scenarios is a portrait of a bid to try to take one planet. Forget the financial cost on taking the planet as I will never return the cost for taking it. This was about calculating what has changed and what needs changing. In each of these scenarios you can assume a tech 40 fleet and tech 40 marines against tech 2 defenders. There were originally about 6500 MU and 5000 HMU defenders on a size 9 world.

Scenario 1: Missile Strikes against HMUs

Ok. I can understand the decreasing returns on the number of missiles fired to the number of HMUs killed as the number of HMUs become closer to zero. However alternate messages might be nice when the decreasing returns start such as Missiles unable to find targets, Multiple missiles hit the same target etc rather than 203 Missile(s) detonated before impact

I can't understand why so many missiles are detonated before impact against a TEC 2 world!?

It looks to me that there were only so many HMUs left. The computer used enough missiles to kill those HMUs, then the rest were detonated...

This is an odd result for missile strikes. The number of missiles detonated before impact is not affected by the number of targets on the ground. However the planet must have a military base on it otherwise there would not be the larger number of detonations before impact in the last two attacks. What I can't quite get a grip on is how low the number of losses were as far as missile detonations in the first few attacks, then it jumps up to a whopping 203. That could happen given the random factors thrown into the equations. But 5 straight incredibly low 'rolls' so to speak on the random number is just plain good luck. I'd take it.
