Answers to your questions, from my limited experience:
Did the cargo sell for 840 or 40 RU's? If it sold for 840 RU then what is this tariff and who gets it?

It sold for 840 RU and you, as planet owner, got the 40 RU tarrif.
After a successful invasion, what determines how many MU stay on the planet and how many reload aboard the transports?

AFAIK, the MUs remain on planet until you order them back on the transports.

The planet is requesting 374 cargo units, that for the moment is the max you can sell at the world and still get 21 ru's per cargo unit, or 7,854 ru's per sell. This will go up by adding marines or pop and other planet defenses, unless they are already maxed. Instead of selling 40 units sell 374. The tariff is collected by the planet governor or you and goes into your coffers.

The bigger the planet i.e. mining potential the more you can sell and buy from the world for merchant trading.

It depends on planet size. If you invade with more MUs than the planet can hold, the surviving MUs will go to two places- as many MUs as can normally fit on the planet (100 MU per planet size) will do so, the rest go back on the ships.

You sold 40 cargo for 840 RU's. The planet takes it's cut of 40 RU's. Course if you own the planet then you collect the 40 RU's rather than another empire. You only lose the 40 RU's if you're not selling or buying goods from your own worlds. Traders can trade with anyone's worlds, Ag players can sell ag goods to any planet they have an ag center on, and miners can sell goods to planets where they own the mining centers. Course smugglers and pirates can also sell their ill gotten booty to any planet as well. Message should probably be removed for some race types.

The question isn't why I got my butt kicked, that is apparent. Question is why didn't the missile ships fire missiles on a strike against forts? Isn't that the entire purpose of doing a missile attack? Yes the planet fired back but the missile STILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED! If this is not an error, then it is a flaw in the combat routine in my opinion. Why in the world would you send in a regular combat fleet to attack and destroy planetary defenses, i.e. the forts and fighters, so you can then send in a missile fleet to destroy the destroyed forts?

And do the forts fire ALL their torpedoes?

And what is the tonnage class of forts? Kind of hard to figure out combat factors [planet tech level * tonnage class] when you can't find the tonnage class of forts in the rules...passive-aggressive ain't I.

EDIT: Ok, a second missile fleet attacked same world the very next action, this time a strike against HMU, which by the very NEXT action, fighter strike, shows HMU on planet. NO torpedoes were launched at fleet, but ofc forts fired at fleet. AGAIN no missiles were launched. :? :? :? Why? If the first fleet didn't fire because of torpedoes from the forts, did the second fleet not fire because there were HMU on the planet??

Looks like the missile fleet was detected before it was able to launch missiles at the forts. The forts opened up with Torpedoes expending all they had then opened fire on your fleet themselves. Your fleet took a lot of torpedo damage and then when engaging the forts destroyed them along with some fighters. However they also retired after the battle.

One way to avoid catastrophic losses on your missile fleets is to give them break contact orders. That way if they get detected and the forts open fire with torpedoes they'll retire at the first opportunity rather than engage the forts.

As to your second question don't have enough info to guess. However from the combat report you are sending in a lot of missile ships in one fleet. That is pretty much guaranteed to be detected approaching the planet. Try sending in 5-10 ships in a fleet. 5 usually get through the first time but every ship you add after that will have a greater chance of being detected. By the time you fleet is 20 or more ships you are going to be detected pretty much automatically.

Are you saying that if they get detected going in they abort the missile launch? They only launch if not detected inbound to the target? I find that a bit unrealistic. IF the ships don't have break contact S.O., then I see no reason for them NOT to launch.

Oh well that just doubled the amount of orders it will take to subdue a stubborn NPC...and I have several to throw down a subduing to.

Oh, and they destroyed SOME of the forts not all. The second fleet strike (a different fleet) against HMU also didn't launch.

And again, what is the tonnage class of a Fort?

You sold 40 units for 21 ru's. The planet collected a tariff of 1 ru per unit if you own the planet then your funds should have grown 880 ru's.
